Between the carousel and the pixie kingdom, a great figure-eight of packed dirt rings with cheering. This is the Great Snail Race, and these are its eight giant snails — the very eight that race at my Witchlight table. Clod, the gruff goblin Race Overseer, has exactly one speech: “I want a clean race! No magic or weapons! You hurt one of my snails, I’ll hurt you!”

Reaching the betting tent…
New to the betting tent? How win, place, and show work
- Win — your snail must finish 1st. Biggest payout.
- Place — your snail must finish 1st or 2nd.
- Show — your snail must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Safest, smallest payout.
The exotic window (for seasoned track folk):
- Exacta — pick the snails that finish 1st and 2nd, in exact order.
- Quinella — pick the two snails that finish 1st and 2nd, in either order.
- Trifecta — pick 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in exact order. The longest shot in the tent, priced accordingly.
The numbers in the field table are gold pieces won per 1 gp bet — and a winning bettor keeps their stake too. Queen’s Majesty pays double the field, as the betting tent has always had it: cracked shell, long odds, biggest cheers.
Chalk your wagers before the race. After the real race is run at the table, the Race Overseer posts the top three and the board settles every bet automatically.
The Practice Heat
While the real racers rest, run an exhibition heat — pure spectacle, no wagers harmed.
